Whilst it may be true to say that in the grand scheme of it all; that Soulwax are 2 Many
DJs , 2 Many DJs however is not the sum of Soulwax as a whole; confused? Don't be.
Not just studio or booth boffins like you might think, despite a predilection towards it,
they are in fact a highly acclaimed band in their own right, that have been known to tear
the roof off venues in their day, touring their last studio album- the much lauded 'Much
Against Everyone's Advice' (released in 1999) took them across Europe on several vast
sellout tours (including a triumphant sold out show at London's Astoria), interspersed
with some key festival appearances across the continent.
For those of you more familiar with the name Soulwax, through the 2 Many DJs Alta-ego
of the bands Dewaele brothers; their mix compilation 'As heard on Radio Soulwax Part 2'
(which has sold in excess of 300,000 copies since it's release), from the chapter about
them in acclaimed Novelist Nick Hornby's '31 songs' book released last year, or more
than likely from one of their many in demand club and festivals, sets the world over.
They have also committed remix to wax as Soulwax for the likes of Felix Da Housecat
('Rocketride'), Ladytron ('Seventeen'), Kylie Minogue ('Can't Get You Out Of My Head'),
Playgroup ('Make It Happen'), DJ Shadow ('Six Days') and Sugababes ('Round Round')
amongst others, and are currently working on producing Tiga's debut album back home
in Ghent (In Belgium in case you wondered).
Now however is the time to prepare yourselves to return to the wider world of Soulwax.
So to clarify, Soulwax ARE the aforementioned brothers David & Stephen Dewaele,
Stefaan Van Leuven augmented by the return of former drummer, Steve Slingeneyer .
So why so long and what about 'Any Minute Now?'
To quote the old adage "Rome wasn't built in a day," would be a vast and oh so ironic
understatement on this matter; In any case - the end product is all you need to worry
about. Forged out of steely determination, perfectionism, and unvanquished enthusiasm
'Any Minute Now' is Soulwax's finest hour, their calling card to the world, and a
remarkable feat of logistical planning and top quality European engineering.
Recorded over the past three years 'Any Minute Now' -the album; was made in London,
New York, and at their home studio in Ghent, predominantly produced by Flood
(Smashing Pumpkins, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey,U2, Nine Inch Nails),
and mixed with Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). 'Any Minute Now'
has been aided, abetted and inspired by their experiences, ups & downs, friends,
colleagues, curiosity, boredom, scenes and sights, people and places. It is personable and
introspective yet dark and uplifting in the same breath.
"You have to listen to the whole album as a whole to really understand where it's at,
musically and lyrically it’s very different in places, but still very us," says Stephen. "The
reason we took so long over it, with the different versions of each track, and the mixing,
we wanted to get it right, and make an album - album. We think you can listen to from
beginning to end. It's hard for us to say what we want from the album, finishing was our
biggest goal, anything else is a bonus"
Artwork comes courtesy of Trevor Jackson (Playgroup/Output label boss come old
school sleeve designer) with an idea based around a complex series of dots. "Trevor was
one of our friends that came to the studio a lot during the process of making it.We
actually asked him a long time ago to do the sleeve. We share the same passions for
graphic design, architecture, talking about girls, video games and err robots," laughs
Stephen. "The graphic aspect is very us, its not too flashy, but something that will stand
the test of time," adds David.
